Shanty
Shanty takes inspiration from improvised and illicite construction. However, despite the appearance of irregular forms and crude materials, the details are delicate and purposeful. The concrete base is cast in an angular formwork with integrated spacers which create mortises to receive the wooden structure; the wooden members are thoughtfully joined with lap joints and dovetails; the undulated metal sheets are riveted together at regular intervalles and thin metal ties connect it to the wooden structure. The work is illuminated by construction site lights drawn from the ceiling of the gallery space. This juxtaposition of improvisation and planned assemblages interrogates our perceptions of value, expertise and craft within informal construction techniques.
