Common Detail
Common Detail is the first collaborative sculptural investigation into building by Nicholas Morris and Eike Maas. The sculpture captures an artist’s misinterpretation of architectural drawings, where industrial components optimized for profit efficiency are supplanted by crafted details emergent from the artist’s relationship with material and technique. The sculpture mimics beam connections with cast brackets. The figures of human hands replace Simpson Strong-Tie LU46 U Face-Mount Joist Hangers. The detail of the post base set into a cast reproduction of an Isère river stone re-imagines the scribed post base common to traditional Japanese construction and modern techniques of raising posts with metal knives. The specified wood, Douglas Fir-Larch, is hand-selected for grain quality, moisture content and pattern-matching.
